For the privateer in the mid 1970s who
wanted to go sport car racing, and in particular compete
successful at the famed 24 hrs of L Mans, there was really only
one viable option, the Porsche RSR. Introduced in 1973 the RSR
was a factory built racing car based on the 911 chassis. These
were not converted street cars, but rather purpose built
competition models designed and built from the ground up for
serious racing use. In 1974 the factory made significant changes
to the car including a new 3.0 ltr engine, wider wheels with
centre locking hubs and improved aerodynamics. The result was a
car that would dominate the GT category and challenge for
overall wins around the would

Porsche introduced the 964 Turbo model in March, 1990 as
the successor to the 930.
Unfortunately, they hadn't had the necessary time to develop a turbocharged version
of the 3.6 litre M64 engine, and chose to re-use the 3.3 litre
engine from the 930, with several minor revisions that made the
engine smoother, less prone to turbo
lag and more
powerful, with a total output of 320 PS (240 kW; 320 hp) @ 5750
rpm. A total of 3,660 of the 964 Turbos were built.
In 1992 the 3.3 litre Turbo S was introduced. With a power of
381 PS (280 kW; 376 hp) and with a lightweight interior and
limited "creature comforts" the Turbo S was one of the fastest
cars on the road. With lowered suspension,
a front strut brace and manual steering, the Turbo S was geared
to performance. About 80 cars were produced during the only year
of production.
Porsche released the 964 Turbo 3.6 in January, 1993 now
featuring a turbocharged version of the 3.6 litre M64 engine and
producing 360 PS (260 kW; 360 hp) @ 5500 rpm, the 3.6 litre
powered Turbo was produced only for model
year 1993/1994,
with fewer than 1,500 of them produced in total, making it one
of the rarest and most sought after Porsches produced since the 959.
At the end of 964 production in 1994 the Porsche factory had
some 90 Turbo chassis left. These were all transferred to Porsche
Exclusiv and
built as the very special Turbo 3.6S. The Turbo 3.6S was
available either with the traditional 964 Turbo 3.6 body, or
with the exclusive Slant nose option.

These models, valued by collectors, are considered by many to be
the greatest classic 911s all-time. RS stands for Rennsport in
German,
meaning "racing sport". The Carrera name was reintroduced from
the 356 Carrera
which had itself been named after Porsche's victories in the Carrera
Panamericana races
in Mexico in
the 1950s. The RS was built so that Porsche could enter racing
formulae that demanded that a certain minimum number of production
cars were
made. Compared with a standard 911S, the Carrera 2.7 RS had a
larger engine (2687 cc) developing 210 PS (150 kW; 210 hp) with
MFI, revised and stiffened suspension,
a "ducktail" rear spoiler, larger
brakes,
wider rear wheels and rear wings. In RS Touring form it weighed
1075 kg (2370 lb), in Sport Lightweight form it was about 100 kg
(220 lb) lighter, the saving coming from the thin-gauge steel
used for parts of the body shell and also the use of thinner
glass. In total, 1580 were made, comfortably exceeding the 500
that had to be made to qualify for the vital FIA Group
4 class.
49 Carrera RS cars were built with 2808 cc engines producing
300 PS (221 kW). |

Porsche further developed the 911 into the 911 R specifically
for use in motor racing. A limited production run of 19 cars
were built at the Baur body shop in Stuttgart for a select group
of privateer racing drivers and the Porsche factory. The "R" (R
= Racing) was a prototype built on the basis of the standard
Coupé with a Carrera six-cylinder engine, developing an
impressive 210 hp. It weighed only 830 kilograms, thanks to a
large number of fibre glass parts and extremely minimalist
equipment and, with basic equipment, cost DM 45,000.
The 911 demonstrated its robustness and speed at the 84-hour
"Marathon de la Route" at the Nürburgring in 1967, which Porsche
used as a welcome test stand for a new standard part: "Sportomatic"
transmission. Vic Elford, Hans Herrmann and Jochen Neerpasch won
the race in a 911 R.

Porsche developed the ST, of
which 33 were built in 1970 and 1971, taking full
advantage of the new FIA rules allowing a two inch wider
track. Accordingly , wheel arches were widened to
accommodate seven inch front and nine inch rear wheels.
Weight reduction was even more radical, including
thinner gauge steel for the roof and floor pans. Heating
ducts, seat slide supports, the glove box lid, ashtray,
sun visors and rear torsion bar covers were deleted
Transverse bars linked the strut towers, while
soundproofing and under seal were omitted and minimal
paint was applied. Fibre glass front and rear bumpers.
fibre glass front lid and light weight Plexiglass side
and rear windows were included. The 2.5 litre engine
produced 270 bhp and upgraded ventilated disc brakes
Recaro seats and a variety of fuel capacities completed
the specification |

In 1974 the roadworthy motorsport 911 series continued its run.
With a bore/stroke ratio of 95 x 70.4 mm the car had a
displacement of 2,993. With its systematic lightweight
construction the RS 3.0 only weighed in at 900 kg This low
weight was achieved by using thin-gauge sheet parts and an emaciated
equipment level. The braking system on the 911 provided
steadfast deceleration even under the highest stresses |
